Were Volcanoes the Origin of Life on Earth?

Volcanoes generate huge amounts of lightning during their eruptions.  They also produce a slew of chemicals that when mixed and struck with electrical charges produce the building blocks of life.  New analysis of an old series of experiments shows that even more compounds are created than was previously thought.

Other recent studies show that the lightning actually begins before the dust plume extends above the rim of the volcano and may be caused by disruption of the Earth’s electrical field.

If these theories pan out then the implications for life on other worlds would be to look at planets or satellites which have magnetic fields and have had high levels of volcanism in their history.

New RAF Secret Weapon?

The Morgan trike, not a Harley Davidson (although they did attempt to negotiate a deal to power it with Harley engines), will be unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show next week.  Blending old and new elements into its design it appears that Morgan has created a modern classic for a touring bike.

Powered by S&S 1,917cc, 56-degree, vee-twin, two valve engine.  A Mazda MX-5 gearbox and Honda Goldwing shaft drive apply the power to the road.

115bhp at 2,000 rpm, lots of torque, and top speed estimated at 125mph.

Not to mention its looks!
